In 1923, New Nanshe was established in the name of disseminating new thoughts and reassessing old tradition in order to differentiate the club from Nanshe established in 1909. In addition to learning from the modern intelligentsia and the New Faction group, New Nanshe published New Nanshe Magazine, including many articles related to western institutions and theories. These actions showed strong intentions and signs for chasing after the New Culture Movement camp. This research paper aims to reveal the significance of the practices of New Nanshe in the transitional era of modern China through focusing on the member composition, introduction of western thinking and system, and the developmental track from Nanshe to New Nanshe. By discussing these topics, it is indicated that, during a period of transition, apart from taking a binary position of choosing either new or old, there are much more complicated views which manifest the conflicts of mind in that period. Moreover, although the members of New Nanshe chose to follow the footsteps of the New Culture Movement camp, the influences of Nanshe which was regarded as traditional faction still existed. Therefore, the relation and connection between Nanshe and New Nanshe can’t be ignored, especially the phenomena of derivation, continuation and variation. This research hopes to facilitate further discussions and research about the issues regarding the continuation and interaction between the old and the new, the dissemination of modern thoughts as well as the reassessment of traditional culture during the transitional period of late Qing and early Republican.
