When “president” was translated into Chinese in nineteenth century,the most popular word was “Bolixitiende” (「伯理璽天德」). This essay focuses on how “Bolixitiende” as a “new term” was created, circulated and finally disappeared. Telling the story of “Bolixitiende” in nineteenth century China, we can find the process of how a “new term” played the role of “keyword.”
